If you are like most people, you have watched energy costs skyrocket in the last few years. Well guess what? Prices for oil, natural gas and electricity will only go up. Want to begin saving hundreds, even thousands of dollars on your yearly heating and hot water bills?

Modern wood boilers utilize gasification burning technology to get an amazing 87% energy efficiency from traditional wood fuel sources. These wood boilers utilize a combustion technology called ‘Gasification’ to capture, extract and transfer this energy that typical wood furnaces simply waste.

As the wood is burned in the firebox, fresh air is blown downwards through the logs and coals. As this hot smoke and air mixture is forced into the combustion chamber, it is mixed with a second jet of super-heated air. This results in a torch like combustion of the retained gases, at spectacular temperatures exceeding 1800 degrees.

The result: almost all the gases are burned, with little residual soot or creosote, and the extra energy extracted is transferred to a full jacket heat exchanger. This extraordinary process allows gasification wood boilers to achieve overall heating efficiencies of almost 90%!

A long burn cycle of up to 8-10 hours, means less hassle, more comfort.

Gasification wood boilers burn cleanly, with little creosote or ash, almost eliminating the risk of chimney fire. With virtually no exhaust gases, they help ease the burden on the environment, and greenhouse gas emissions, while burning wood, nature’s oldest renewable fuel.

Did you know you can install and integrate wood boilers with your existing heating system, so when you are not home, your conventional furnace conveniently runs? When you return home, it’s back to the savings! Burn any kind of wood you like, including pallets, chip, waste, and even fresh cut green wood. No waiting years for your wood piles to cure.

After all the ratings say they are up to 95% efficient.

Boilers that are rated above 90% are called condensing boilers. They are designed to extract heat from the combustion gases that’s normally lost in the exhaust lower rated boilers.

This energy saving process will only occur under certain conditions

.

Condensing boilers rely on lower water temperatures of 135 degrees F and lower to gain higher efficiencies.

I’ve seen high efficient rated condensing boilers that were operating at efficiencies in the mid 80% range because the water temperatures were too high to allow the boiler to condense and release the extra heat into the heating system.

The best way to ensure low water temperatures are to use a control system also adjusts the water temperature according to the outdoor temperature as well as the indoor temperature.

These systems are called weather responsive controls or outdoor reset controls.

Not only can it save 15% – 20% on your energy bill but also increases comfort. It provides a constant, steady flow of heat throughout the house

Some boilers are equipped with this control and some are sold as an option.

Stay clear of those who try to sell a condensing boiler without this control strategy if you want to reap the benefits of a high efficiency boiler.

Another thing you should consider is the material the heat exchanger is made from.

For a long-lasting boiler choose one with a stainless steel heat exchanger rather than aluminum.

One boiler manufacturer stopped making boilers with aluminum heat exchangers because of their concern of longevity.

Follow these tips and you’ll get the return on investment you are looking for.

Boiler Safety

Boilers used to require constant upkeep and maintenance, but developments in digital technology have meant that you’re now less likely to notice if something is wrong with your boiler. A set of safety checks exists though; you can implement these to ensure that your boiler and home gas appliances stay safe.

Boiler Upkeep

Take out a boiler insurance policy from your energy supplier or a third party. If your boiler or heating system breaks down suddenly breaks down you should not have to pay any costly emergency fees.

Typical cover is in the region of £15 a month, but like many, if this includes your annual boiler service then you’ve instantly saved yourself around £100 (the average cost of a boiler service).

Annual Checks

In order to work within the law, your gas boiler technician should be Corgi (the Council for Registered Gas Installers) registered. If you have an oil heating system then contact the Oil Firing Technical Association for the Petroleum Industry to find a local, registered technician.

Carbon Monoxide Intoxication

Carbon monoxide(CO) is a colourless, odourless and potentially lethal gas. It’s emitted by household appliances a result of incomplete burning of gas.

CO poisoning can occur via a shared flue or chimney, and occurs when:

”	The appliance is faulty.

”	The appliance wasn’t installed properly.

”	Ventilation around the appliance is inadequate.

An audible CO alarm can also be fitted. These cost around £25 and will alert you if carbon monoxide is detected in your home, much like a standard fire alarm.

Expenses

If you struggle to meet the cost of your yearly boiler service, contact the Energy Saving Trust (EST), your energy supplier or your local authority to see if you qualify for free checks through the Priority Services Register.

Keira Parker is a freelance journalist associated with www.energychoices.co.uk.

A family run professional & reliable company with 30 years experience specialising in central heating. Based in London, our importance is to give a personal service.

We provide an annual Boiler Service which helps reduce your gas bills and the risk of breakdown.

We design and install central heating systems to maximise fuel efficiency and the longevity of your system

we provide a range maintenance contracts and carry out annual services. We stock most spare parts for repairs to make sure we provide the best aftercare service possible to all our customers.

All Ramki Installers are fully qualified Corgi engineers, of which the most experienced have been installing full central heating systems since 1971 in West London, Middlesex and Surrey.

Boiler Repairs

The size of the boiler should be matched to the size of the property. If the boiler is oversized, then the fuel bills will be excessive. If the boiler is undersized, it may not generate enough heat in winter. The ideal size for a boiler is one that copes adequately on the coldest day of the year. Most boilers are oversized by at least 30%.

Combination Boilers

These boilers provide both instant hot water and central heating installer, but not at the same time. They are hot water priority which means when hot water is being run there is no heat output to the radiators. These boilers are ideal in smaller homes where space is at a premium or where the demand for hot water is not too great. These are not recommended for houses with more than one bathroom due to the hot water flow rate which can only feed one tap at a time.

System Boilers

These boilers are built with an expansion vessel and a circulating pump, which allows for a lot tidier installation.

MAINTENANCE & BREAKDOWN CARE

A reliable, first-rate service to repair and maintain your central heating system.

Offering peace of mind at a fair price.

Our Maintenance and Breakdown Care plans include the following:

Gas utility bills have seen a sharp increase in the last couple of months which have created quite a shocking effect on people with lower incomes who may have a smaller house or flat.

By installing an energy efficient boiler within a house or flat, can lower heating and hot water bills by 15-20%. One such product is the Worcester Greenstar 28i Junior combi boiler which is part of the market leading Worcester Greenstar boiler range of energy-saving condensing gas-fired boilers. If a house has an older style boiler, it could equate to paying 30% more for heating and hot water bills than a new condensing combi boiler.

The rising fuel prices are actually beneficial to the environment as many people are being economic with fuel in a cost saving manor. Does the meaning of why someone is using less fuel matter if, it is helping them and the environment at the same time? The Worcester Greenstar 28i Junior combi boiler works by recycling exhaust gases to extract and reuse latent heat which reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Renewable energy devices are being introduced more frequently now in the form of solar panels and ground heat source pumps. Many of the leading plumbing and heating brands have solar panel products for the heating of hot water. Some packages can reduce an annual water heating bill by up to 60%. Solar cylinders are also available which enables a dual heat source application utilising the solar panels with one coil, and the boiler (or other heat source) with the other coil. A solar panel kit is designed to supplement a standard boiler with a hot water cylinder for production of hot water. The existing cylinder in the house is replaced with a cylinder containing two heat cells, one from the boiler in the house and one from the solar panels. A solar panel system of good size should provide approximately 50-70% of the domestic hot water requirements for a typical household. The remaining hot water will be supplied by the boiler in the house.

Been hitting a few snags with the boiler of late. Last week, it cut out completely so I decided to ‘give it a go’ myself. My mate Skeletor fitted the gas pipes in the first place, and he had no qualifications whatsoever, so I figured it couldn’t be too hard for me, as someone who uses gas lighters on a regular basis.

I feel sleepy. I’ve been up all night reading about heaters. Couldn’t see a pilot light, which seems to be where it’s all happening these days in gas boilers. Once you light that, you can expect to have hot water in half an hour. One promising forum post I read suggested turning the gas on and leaving it to run for eight or nine hours, and then lighting the pilot. It’s nearly been that long now, but I started having second thoughts around the five-hour mark when I realised that a lot of gas must be escaping through the door in the boiler cupboard, so I stuffed towels in the cracks and it’s fairly well sealed. With that much gas building up I reckon once I light it we should get hot water in a matter of seconds, kind of like deep-frying a piece of chicken, except the shower will be hot, not the food. Something will happen, surely. I can fit right in the boiler cupboard – it’s quite big – so I think I’ll sit in there for the last hour or so, then I can seal up the cupboard from within. Maybe I can fit my comfy chair in there. That’d be nice. I’m ever so sleepy.

To be honest, I think I could use some help. Please give me your suggestions. The way I see it, even ten replies from whoever’s out there is surely better than one ‘expert’ opinion, for which I would very probably have to pay upwards of £30 for. No, I think the safest, cheapest way to resolve this is through the internet. I was a bit worried about trying to fix it myself at first, but one thread entitled ‘modern boilers have all sorts of safety measures built in’ informed me that, in fact, modern boilers have all sorts of safety measures built in, and that it’s always best to have a crack at fixing gas problems yourself – after all, it’s really not as dangerous as many household activities, such as chopping or trying to get golf balls into a mug with a pitching wedge. People say it’s dangerous to mess around with gas, but these people are living in the dark ages. I mean, people say that mercury is dangerous, but where’s the proof? It’s just a made-up theory to scare people, like AIDS, or the holocaust, and I can’t be thinking about the holocaust when a gas pipe is threatening to make showering a lot less fun than it used to be.

So please do leave me a reply if you have any advice. I’ll check this blog again after I get some shut eye. It’s gone unusually quiet in the house; I haven’t heard a peep out of my flatmates for some hours now. Perhaps they’re sleeping too.

Ah, heaven. Literally heaven. They played Stereolab as I sat in heaven’s waiting room, in which only the magazines I like were strewn about a big white coffee table. I met a chap from CORGI, the Council for Registered Gas Installers, who showed me the error of my ways, and pointed out exactly where it was I went wrong – apparently, I should never have pissed about with the gas myself. Turns out that muggins here should have contacted a reputable firm such as British Gas, who offer advice on gas maintenance.

And the winner is, Kate Boiler Winslet. And up she comes to accept the award, tears streaming and words askew, forgetting which manufacturer to thank and which energy supplier to mention.

No, only joking, and of course, for the second year running, the best boiler for 2008 is the Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28HE. This particular beauty was voted, again, the Best Buy by Which, the leading consumer magazine.

Which picked 52 boilers from leading manufacturers and put them through a rigorous testing procedure. The criteria included energy efficiency, emissions, fuel consumption, hardiness and, importantly, how easy they were for a Corgi registered gas engineer to service and install.

From the 52 boilers, a final line-up of eight were labelled Which Best Buys. They were deemed to be highly efficient and easy-to-use, and some of the easiest to operate and service.

And from the final eight was selected the ultimate Best Buy of the all, the Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28HE which came out with the highest score of them all at 79%. It won five star ratings in the categories of efficiency, performance, emissions, features and installation. Four star ratings were given for its power and ease of use. And Which particularly praised the Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28HE’s suitability for smaller houses and flats.

The Which report was fulsome in its praise, stating: “It’s one of the few boilers we’ve tested which reaches the very highest efficiency standards, matching its claims to meet the A SEDBUK standard. As well as offering excellent efficiency, this boiler is reassuringly easy to use. Its instruction manuals are well organised and the controls on the boiler are simple too.”

By the way, in case you didn’t know, SEDBUK stands for Seasonal Efficiency and it is a rating scheme to assess the efficiency of a domestic boiler. It represents an average annual efficiency rating of a domestic boiler which runs in a typical house, having made certain assumptions including usage pattern, control mechanisms and climate. SEDBUK is a government backed initiative developed under their Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme. It involved the co-operation of the major boiler manufacturers in the testing of their products over a three-year period and then calculating a theoretical seasonal efficiency model for each one.

To take a quick look at the Baxi Duo-tec Combi HE range, it represents the state of the art in boiler technology. It is also one of the most efficient, converting more than 90% of their fuel to heat and this earns them the A SEDBUK rating. Current Government legislation states that all new boilers, where practically possible, should have a High Efficiency rating of at least 86%.

The range also boasts user-friendly controls and unlike many of its rivals, has strong design features designed to match with modern homes. They also incorporate easy-to-read pressure gauges. The range consist of the 40kW, 33kW, 28kW and 24kW output models for natural gas which, says Baxi, are designed to accommodate the needs of properties from the sizes of flats, to large houses. There is also a Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28HE LPG model.

They enjoy a two-year parts and labour guarantee, subject to an annual service of course.

And finally, Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28HE is also the CORGI Boiler of the year for 2008.

Baxi must be very proud.

Heating a home has always been an interesting challenge, especially for homes in colder countries. To overcome this challenge, we have to pay attention to three important elements. They are heat and energy efficiency, noise level, and cost. When consumers look at heating systems, these should be the three major factors to consider. Let’s take a look at what is currently available in the market.

In general, there are two types of boiler systems – water and steam. Each system uses a different type of technology. Let’s start with steam boiler systems.

Steam boiler system.

Steam systems are less commonly seen in modern times. This is because the entire heating system is considered much more complicated when compared to a water boiler system. Pressure gauges, steam valves, and powerful fans are required for this system to work. Clearly, with such heavy duty equipment, a lot of energy is consumed. The boiler is powered by gas, oil or electricity. The steam is then transported through the house via pipes and radiators.

And because of the complexity of the steam boiler system, it is more expensive to install and consumes more energy. This leads to higher long term costs. On top of that, steam boiler systems are not known to distribute heat evenly. For these reasons, the water boiler system has risen quickly to replace the steam boiler system.

Water boiler system.

The water boiler system is a much simpler system. Water is first heated in a boiler to a temperature that is above 150 degree Fahrenheit. A pump, controlled by a thermostat, is responsible for circulating the boiling water through pipes and radiators. The radiators are much smaller when compared with those required by the steam boiler system.

Due to the absence of powerful fans and huge radiators, the water boiler system is remarkably silent. One can expect to have a good night’s rest even when the water boiler system is on.

On top of that, the water boiler system can spread heat more evenly when compared with the older boiler system. Since fans are used to spread heat around the house by the steam boiler system, so is dust and bacteria. For those with sensitive noses or skin, this means additional health hazards.

When you make a quick comparison between the two systems, water boiler systems stood out as the clear winner. The system is much simpler to install, cost less to install, and cost less to maintain. The devices that the system uses are also much smaller, which means that less space is required for the system to run. Air is cleaner due to the absence of annoying loud fans that come with steam boiler systems.

Improvements are constantly being made to heating systems. Radiators are becoming smaller and smaller, and they take up lesser and lesser space. As a homeowner, this is great news. Soon, you won’t even notice the radiators are there!
